Daniel Arshams Time Dilation

An in depth look at Daniel Arshams latest exhibit at the Perrotin Gallery in NYC.

American contemporary artist Daniel Arsham's newest exhibit called "Time Dilation 3021" is a masterclass work featuring some of his quarantine work and projects that were not revealed to public until february and it is truly a sight to see in person. Using his famous artificial decay in this work it was nostalgic yet refreshing to show it in different ways. Showcased at the famous Perrotin Gallery in New York City it was presented on all three floors and each floor with their own little flavor. From paintings to sculptures replicating roman statues to modern pop culture and even Pokemon it truly had something for all.

To truly appreciate the artwork we must delve into Daniel Arshams humble beginnings in the art world. Born in Cleveland, Ohio he lived there from his childhood until young adulthood when he received a full scholarship to Cooper Union in New York City and from there on his career took off. Graduating in 2003 he moved to Miami to start an art exhibition called " The Faces" and through that he met Emmanuel Perrotin the soon to be founder of Perrotin Gallery in France. Through this he was able to showcase his work internationally and that is when he was starting to gain global recognition.

From there on out he has worked in multiple disciplines truly showcasing his talent and unique vision through fashion, painting, sculptures and architecture. Since then he has created his own architecture company called Snarkitecture in 2007 and has worked with people in multiple disciplines such has Kim Jones one of the creative directors of Dior, Hajime Soriyama and even the likes of Porsche and Pokemon his works transcend all boundaries.

In Daniel Arshams newest exhibition he truly tested his skills and used multiple types of platforms to show his work. From paintings to resin molds and to statues each was truly executed in masterclass fashion and certainly did not fail to disappoint. From his classical work like the eroded roman statues to new endeavors like painting and creating Pokemon statues and translucent molds it was quite the experience. The three floor exhibition was truly vivid and captivated me. Each floor was something out of a dreamscape with how the works looked from the eroded Pokemon cards to the translucent molds of film cameras and Mickey mouse and to the Greco-Roman statues it truly felt like I was walking through some cartoon but I was in a building on Orchard Street and just having that feeling of being transcended out of reality for a bit was truly captivating.

One thing that struck me was that all of the pieces did not have much a relation or correlation to them. So many different types of artwork from different time periods and from different disciplines, so why is it that all of these are showcased together, what do they represent? After pondering on the thought I came to realize that the intersection of correlation is that they were all once and still are pivotal in our culture and that they are truly cemented in history. Although they are eroded in this exhibition it shows that time will always be victorious over the physical yet in the mental these are things we will always remember and cherish. As always, this is for your viewing pleasure.
