Unmastered Aesthetic Film Review #1

The Lomography Lomochrome Xr 100-400 film transforms everyday scenery into a psychedelic experience in the best way possible.

The Lomography Lomochrome Purple Xr 100-400 film came out around 2018 and has caught the attention of film photographers in a mostly positive way. For the niche group of experimental film photographers it is definitely a favorite and usually sells out very shortly after each new batch. That of course is for a good reason being how varied each shot can be but the intrinsic beauty this film has as well. When shot in the best conditions the images produced are otherworldly and seems like you are living in an old school Asap Rocky music video, but conditions will not be ideal all the time and thus will lead to inconsistencies.

With the film having an iso range of 100-400 it has good range and is best shot in well lit areas but depending on your colors of your landscape or what you are trying to shoot it will lead to different results. Also the sun angle plays a very big part in how reactive the film will be as well. For the most part greens turn into purples and reds and blues turn into a more cyan greenish tint. However pink hues and tints have seen to be a consistency and also it is a very granular film as well, so if you like a high grain content that is a plus for you.

From the images above they were all shot ranging from 200 to 400 iso and this film definitely has a learning curve in how to properly shoot it. With those "perfect" shots though the grain content and transformation of the colors will leave you with a smile on your face. Each shot truly encapsulates almost a different reality in the way it looks and that is the beauty of it, although it has predictable color shifts it still will surprise you in some shots in the way they come out. It creates these nostalgic images that yet are in the present, this film is almost like a time capsule in the present moment. Its true beauty is that you can achieve these shots by just pointing and shooting, no photoshop or editing to achieve the same results, truly raw analog beauty at its finest.

It is a little tricky to shoot at first but that is the charm of this film, it is not meant to have extremely fine grain content or be an incredibly sharp film but its meant to evoke emotion and give even the most mundane shots a new life. I would absolutely love to experiment with this film again and buy a couple more rolls but that will have to wait a bit. If you are considering looking into this film I would recommend it to get more "experimental shots" in and also to differentiate your aesthetic as well and to involve something new into the repertoire. I'd give this film a 7.7/10. As always for your viewing pleasure.
